Kati Patang: Not the classic Bollywood movie but an online store for kites by a 19 year old!

Sahil Kukreja is like every other teenager; 19 year old guy, currently in his 2nd year of college. Being a true Amdavadi, he has been completely lost in the fervour of the upcoming Uttarayan festival. His love for kites and aspirations of being an entrepreneur is what led him to start, an online store for kites!

Ask Sahil, what is all about, and the excited first-time entrepreneur breaks into a breathless monologue. “ is going to be a one-stop-shop for all your kite needs this Uttarayan. Right now, delivery is available only to people in Ahmedabad. Since setting up the store was a rather last minute decision, I didn’t have time to manage the back-end arrangements to be able to supply beyond Ahmedabad on time. But for Ahmedabad, the kites will be delivered to your doorstep the same day, on cash-on-delivery basis.”

We ask Sahil, why he thinks Amdavadis will shop online for kites, when every nook and cranny is crammed full with kite shops. To which, he crisply replies, “Apart from the usual range of kites, I’m selling some unique design of kites which are rather difficult to find at the local shops. With such an extensive range, I’m sure to attract a lot of kite lovers. I’m already getting some 30 orders everyday!”

Apart from the beautiful variety of kites at, another reason why Amdavadis may flock to the online store may be to save themselves the hustle bustle of the local bazaars.  Going to buy kites at local shops is nothing less of an adventure – from finding the kites of your choice to bargaining with the shopkeeper, all the while stepping over the toes of a hundred other people doing the same thing.

Sahil has partnered with one of his friends whose family is into manufacturing and selling kites at the local market. has over 50 varieties of kites online, and all the related kite accessories. And to facilitate deliveries within the city, he has tied up with Maruti courier services.

“Setting up has been an easy ride so far. Since I tied up with my friend, there was absolutely no cost of inventory. The only cash I doled out was the subscription fee for setting up an online store on Zepo. And I got it all done in half a day – from setting up the store to uploading the entire inventory. The online store was functional by the end of day.”

As for the budding entrepreneur’s future plans, Sahil says he hasn’t had much time to think of the future. “But from the top of my head and seeing how well this initiative takes off, I’d want to expand to the whole of Gujarat the next season by partnering with kites sellers across all cities. And possibly facilitate online payments to simplify it all.”

So if you are in Ahmedabad right now, and are feeling too lazy to go out and shop for kites, you know your next destination! Happy Uttarayan…
