7 E-commerce Web Design Tips You Can’t Afford To Miss
Talking about E-commerce, the design is the most important factor to ensure the conversions. During my digital marketing career, I have observed that even a minor change in UI or design has changed the direction of the business!
Here are some of the most important things that I have learnt which you might find useful.
1. Less Is More
Making an awesome website doesn’t mean you have to add everything on the same page. In fact, too much clutter distracts users. Using a blank/white space can be a good idea. To further reduce clutter one can always use large product images, clean typography, subtle animation & clear CTA. Check out ETQ product page, a balanced page that shows everything necessary for a customer to buy a shoe cutting down all unnecessary noise.
2. Focused Checkout
Removing distractions on checkout page has always done wonders. This is one sure shot technique to improve your conversions overnight! Excited? If you are in design phase then make sure following things are taken into consideration from start:
- Testimonials: This helps in gaining the trust of customer and reducing cart abandonment.
- No unwanted sections: See how Amazon has removed the main menu at checkout pages to avoid any distractions.
- Upsell but keep it smart: You can surely add upsells but make sure to have an “Add To Cart” button and clickable link of the product to “open in a new window”
- Adding trust factors like “Same day shipping”, “Paypal verified” also helps in conversion
3. Easily Accessible Navigation
Navigation & search bar play a vital role in e-commerce sites, unlike many other news sites as all your repeat customers are going to land on the homepage. Try to keep main menu colour in contrast to the background so that it’s easily viewable. Also, don’t make the size way too short. Short menu looks really cool and gives a nice minimal feeling but it is not easily clickable.
This also gets very important especially when most of the internet users are on mobile, extremely small menu size will make it really hard to tap on the desired button. So keep a check on the mobile version and desktop version of the navigation menu.
Also, features such as mega menu look very cool but they usually lag and end up slowing the website. If you are planning to implement any such feature or design, ensure that it doesn’t end up in lagging of site or increasing the page loading timing.
4. A Timeless Logo
Just like an ecomm store, the logo should be neat too. A good logo must convey the brand’s core message. It is not mandatory to have a premium logo designed at absurd prices, especially when you are just starting up. You can create a logo on your own by using free logo design tools such as Canva or go for a low-cost professional designer on Fiverr or Designhill. Keeping your logo simple is the key! Have you ever seen a big brand with a complex logo?
5. Add to Cart without actually going to product page
Finalizing one item while you shop is always tough. Isn’t it? Users usually follow two-step selection process – adding in wishlist & adding into the cart. To make their life easy make sure that customer doesn’t have to visit the product page to add a product to the cart or wishlist. Also ensure that whenever a product is added to cart, a sidebar shows up with things added in cart. This ensures better conversions and also reduces the frustration of users especially when they are on mobile.
On the product page, display information should be shown in a way that all the details related to the product can be made visible on the same page. This keeps the customer focused and helps in more sales. Everlane has done an amazing thing by allowing customers to select a size, add it to the bag, add to wishlist on hover, all without ever leaving the listing page they are on. Wow, experience!
6. Choose Colors Aligned With Your Niche
Did you know using the right colours can actually help you boost conversions? Yes, they surely can. For example, make sure the add to cart button colour is not dull, it must be a bright one. Most of the add to cart button colours are either Red, golden or green.
Similarly, make sure that cart buttons stand out from the site. Make the button big enough, colour in contrast with the base colour of the site and use a little bit of gradient or hover effect.
7. Don’t Let Your Customers Wait!
Unless they are desperate for the product, no online user is patient enough to wait for your site to load. Try to reduce the page loading time as much as you can because it helps in better sales. You can check the page speed using Gtmetrix or Google’s page speed tools.
A great web design is very important to turn visitors into loyal buyers. It is very important to build trust and brand which every business owner dreams of. You can easily follow the tips mentioned above to create a store which is loved by your customers.
